Time for Ronaldo to face reality
Posted by Dave Roberts on 28/01/2010So Cristano Ronaldo is not happy at his two match ban, which he sees as ‘excessive’. I’ve only one thing to say: ‘Oh Diddums!’
Peyret: Ronaldo - Angel or Demon?
Each time I replay the weekend’s incident which left Partick Mtiliga with a broken nose I wince more and more. Ronaldo knew perfectly well what he was doing, his glance towards his opponent prior to throwing the forearm smash providing enough evidence to confirm his guilt.
He sized up Mtiliga, waited for the perfect moment and unleashed an intentional strike to the player’s face while doing his very best to make it look so accidental every Ronaldo fan on the planet can critcise my views for life. The fact is however, if he had been still wearing the red of Manchester United, he would have faced an automatic three-match ban for violent conduct.
Yes, I have to admit to taking a little satisfaction from his latest reaction as Karma at last seems to have appeared in the life of the Portuguese star. There is no doubt he is a hugely gifted player, and one I’d have in my team at an instant, but he has finally got his comeuppance.
Ronaldo has constantly flaunted the rules with his pathetic diving. He doesn’t just wait for contact, nor invites it, the former United charge has become the master of going down like a sack of spuds at the mere presence of another human being. His contorted faces of pure petulance when things don’t go his way another talent he could without.
So yes, I take joy in seeing him contort again to the news of punishment and hope it serves to remind him that there is more to the game than just talent. Try self control. However, my personal satisfaction is a little tempered at my disappointment at the Spanish Association’s (RFEF) acceptance that the ‘flailing forearm’ was neither wilful nor reckless. Come on, I ask you? For observations stated previously, I cannot go along with that one.
Therefore it is left to Spain’s Sporting Disciplinary Committee (CEDD) to hear Real’s appeal. Let us hope for the sake of the game they have sufficient backbone to take a leaf out of the English FA book and add to the punishment for a ‘frivolous appeal’.
Something tells me I shouldn’t hold my breath too long as the glitz of the appealer and pedestal height of the appealee, may well result in Senor Ronaldo pulling on the white jersey to face Espanyol next weekend.

I am not a Ronaldo fan.
But I don't think he meant it. And the commitee agree or they would have given him a three game ban. Not sure what you are on about glancing in his direction. I saw no such thing. You are the only one that seems to have seen that.

Try argue all you want, you are just a Ronaldo hater, period!!!!

this is total BS!!!
its again coming from a ronaldo hater. Only a person having serious prejudice against ronaldo can make such a statement. For the love of God he was just trying to shrug off the defender.

Dave, dont be a loser. There are a host of you who just cant see Ronaldo do well. If you had even one lesson in physics you would understand how the slightest of pushes when someone is in full flight can or even the move to avoid contact can cause him to fall. Which ofcourse jealous genes would jump up and say ... he dived he dived ... yippeee he is a cheat after all. What can I say Ronaldo has proved he is great, your type of people can only write your opinion of him. Applaud talent, applaud greatness and dont be petty is all I have to say to you.

I guess you missed the fact that poor ole Patrick was holding on to his shirt. The arm swing back was to get him to let go. If Patrick was not holding him; which BTW is against the LOTG and should have had a foul called against him, then he isnt close enough to get his nose smashed.
I get it you don't like Ronnie, but stop perpetrating the belief that he is a diver. Way too many games I watch as defenders trip him to slow him down. But its OK because there little toe actually touched the ball, never mind the fact that there leg is a mid shin as they do it. Lets get real, he is a polarizing player. You either hate him or you love his sublime ability. You want him on your team and you don't want him playing for your opponent. But please lets be honest, OK he broke the guys nose, it was an accident that was it. But Mtiliga should have had a foul called for the hold, and then none of this mess would have ever happened.

Indeed. The move of his which makes me angry is when he is confronted with 2 defenders marking him closely and he starts his little step over routine then just trys to run right between the 2 defenders even though there is zero space there and there WILL be contact, so he creates contact then falls down and immediately looks up for a foul. Jesus, I hate that and he's done it like 50 times. In basketball, that would be an offensive foul.

Personally, I couldnt care less about ronaldo after he switched to united. The one thing reporters all missed when they were reporting on him leaving, was what united were not going to miss. His petulance.

From my view, Ronaldo is biggest & fastest Rising superstar in football industri of modern years, but this are also the weakness coz he's over self confident that always occur unneccesary bad thing take place.Of course he got the natural talent, but its not the only important point for a footballer. When a straight red card is showed out, there must be voilent act as offical witness the incident on the pitch...so two match ban for Ronaldo is reasonable.

Every player is guilty of everything you just said i.e. diving, disappointment when things don't go their way. I suggest you find something better to write about football than picking on one player, who's image you crave to tarnish.

I personally think Ronaldo is the biggest cry baby in soccer today. If he gets tackled and goes to ground he cries to the referee the ball by this time is in his own half, making him always offside, if he is passed the ball. Ronaldo remember the basics, PLAY TO THE WHISTLE.

Only a Ronaldo fan wouldn't agree with you Dave. Same goes to other fans of other players... an Arsenal fan wouldn't agree if somebody said Bentdner is crap, or (to a Chelsea fan)if somebody said Drogba is a lousy diver as well. It's like the dubious penalty your favorite club gets awarded... the fan is bound to say the penalty is genuine, right? But if it was the other way around? Imagine Ronaldo joined Chelsea/ Arsenal instead... would the ManU fans like him? Surely not even if he won a thousand awards. Come on guys, be neutral, and importantly be frank... love your column Dave.

Ronaldo is just a pack of intelligent but lousy player. He is a cheat. No doubt he is talented. He needs some morals. Drogba used to dive too but he seems to have changed. Someone should tell Ronaldo to grow up and stop thinking he could get away with wickedness. A broken nose is not a joke, it means maximum force was applied. Pulling stikers shirts is not new. That's why refs have yellow cards. Ronaldo the scot, Fergie is not there to protect you anymore. Grow up and be a man.
